About LPI
The Lightning Protection Institute and its members are dedicated to the following objectives:
  • To increase understanding of the dangers of lightning to people and property and how the use of properly designed and installed lightning protection systems can reduce these dangers.
  • To test and certify individuals in the design, installation and inspection of lightning protection.
  • To encourage research and development in the science and technology of lightning and lightning protection.
  • To promote the use of nationally recognized standards (NFPA 780, UL 96 & 96A and LPI 175).
  • To require factory material inspections by accredited testing laboratories (Underwriters’ Laboratories). The LPI Certified System has been developed to involve the project owner or his/her representative - typically the specifying electrical engineer -in the complete review of all stages of the lightning protection installation. Inspection procedures are explained in detail in the LPI Certified System Application Instructions Brochure (LPI Information-Brochures). In combination with the Master Label Program of the Underwriters’ Laboratories, the LPI’s staged review of all concealed installation components enhances the overall credibility of the lightning protection installation.

The LPI encourages all consumers to require the design and installation of their lightning protection system be under the direction of an LPI certified Master Installer or Master Installer Designer and that an LPI System Certification be obtained for all protected structures. How do you know if your installer is LPI certified? You can check the Members-Installers section of this web site.  Dealer Contractor companies have Master Installers or Master Installer Designers on staff.  Or, you can ask to see an individual’s current brass engraved Master Installer or Master Installer Designer membership card.
