Company Membership Type

Manufacturer

A company or entity whose primary business is the manufacture of lightning protection system components and who has the demonstrable capacity to produce, fabricate, or offer for sale lightning protection systems and materials. A manufacturer member may have LPI Certified individuals on staff qualified to install LPI Certified systems.

Dealer/Contractor

A company or entity whose primary business is the installation of quality lightning protection systems or system components according to the National Standards and has at least one LPI Certified Master Installer (MI) or Master Installer Designer (MID) on staff. This membership class is qualified to install LPI Certified systems.

Affiliate

A company or entity which provides the installation of quality lightning protection systems or system components according to the National Standards and does not employ an LPI Certified Master Installer (MI) or Master Installer Designer (MID). This membership class would not be able to provide LPI System Certification.

Installer

An Affiliate, Dealer Contractor, or Manufacturer member company with the capability to provide the complete installation of a lightning protection system in accordance with the National Standards.

Professional

Individuals involved in promoting lightning safety and enhancing the science of lightning protection such as architects, engineers, safety directors, scientists, insurance representatives, etc. or any other interested party. Individuals in the Professional Division may become LPI Certified as a Designer Inspector (DI) to review and certify installations of LPI Certified systems.

Supplier

Suppliers of materials and products used in the manufacture of lightning protection system components (e.g. wire, rod, fasteners, part castings, etc.) and/or suppliers allied to lightning protection systems (e.g. arrestors, testing equipment, warning systems, etc.). An Associate / Supplier member would not typically have LPI Certified individuals on staff.

Individual Certification Type

JI

A Journeyman Installer is a skilled craftsman in a specialized trade. This individual is in the process of gaining the experience and education necessary to be a Master Installer. The Journeyman has been examined on the basic requirements for any lightning protection installation during two two-hour examinations.

MI

A Master Installer is a skilled craftsman in a specialized trade who holds advanced knowledge and skills. Master Installers can be expected to select and schedule materials according to specifications, layout a project, supervise workmanship, and inspect work to blueprints, Codes and Standards. Master Installers can attest by signature that projects meet the requirements for LPI System Certification. A MI was first certified to the level of Journeyman and then tested with two additional two-hour examinations to qualify.

MID

A Master Installer Designer is a specialist who is qualified to survey a building or set of plans to determine the basic configuration of a lightning protection system, design the system, supply blueprints and specify materials for installation. The MID is the highest level for individuals involved in contracting lightning protection work. The MID is qualified first as a Master Installer and then tested with an additional two-hour exam to achieve certification from LPI.

DI

Designer Inspector is an individual certification designed to test competence and knowledge in lightning protection design and installation practices for professionals not directly involved in the lightning protection trade (neither installation or product manufacture). Two two-hour exams are required for LPI Certification as a DI.
